Research activities:
NRG scientific and technical programme in fusion technology:
- Irradiation and characterization of fusion reactor relevant structural materials and subassemblies;
- Post-irradiation and reference mechanical testing of various grades of austenitic stainless steel, fasteners, and ferritic/martensitic low activation steels, including fracture mechanics;
- Investigations on advanced materials manufacturing and joining technologies, like EB-welding and HIP-technologies;
- Investigation of the reweldability of irradiated stainless steel for ITER and (re)weldability of ferritic/martensitic low activation steels;
- Development of ceramic tritium breeder materials for ITER/DEMO;
- In-pile measurements of tritium breeding materials and blanket submodules;
- Post-irradiation measurements of tritium retention and release;
- Materials research for plasma facing components;
- Design of irradiation capsules and subassemblies (e.g. for irradiation stress-relaxation), nuclear, thermal and mechanical analyses;
- Spectrally tailored irradiations;
- Neutron & gamma dosimetry, spectrum and damage analysis;
- Management of EU Long Term Materials Programme;
Irradiations are performed in the High Flux Reactor (HFR, 45 MW) in Petten.
