Research activities:
The fusion research at the FOM-Institute for Plasma Physics concentrates on formation and evolution of small scale structures in tokamak physics, and their role in (electron) transport processes. Three elements make up this research programme: 1. theory of electron dynamics and MHD and modelling of transport phenomena; 2. physics and technique of local heating and current drive with EC waves; 3. development of high resolution electron diagnostics. The experimental programme is largely carried out at the TEXTOR-94 tokamak in Juelich, in collaboration with the TEC partners FZ-Juelich and ERM/KMS Brussels. Part of the research programme is done at JET, under the EFDA agreement.

A new research line is being started, focussing on the - ITER relevant - issue of energy transfer from a 1 eV plasma to a material wall. This work is carried out in close collaboration with the Eindhoven University of Technology.

Apart from the fusion oriented research, the Institute is active in the field of molecular physics, laser produced plasmas and X-ray sources, plasma chemistry, and operates the FELIX free electron laser facility for infrared experiments.
