Processes studied include erosion (leading to plasma contamination and reduced lifetime of components), and hydrogen transport and retention (affecting fuel loss and inventory).
Experimental facilities include mass analyzed ion accelerators (single and dual beam), an H-permeation facility and a UHV tritium laboratory. Current studies on tokamaks include JET (UK/EU), DIII-D (General Atomics, US), Alcator C-Mod (MIT, US) and ASDEX-Upgrade (AUG, Germany).
The principal involvement with DIII-D, C-Mod, JET and AUG are based on the development and application of a suite of coupled edge codes, called 'OEDGE' (for Onion-Skin Model + EIRENE + DIVIMP for edge analysis). OSM codes are used to calculate the edge 'plasma background'. The Monte Carlo codes, EIRENE and DIVIMP, are used to calculate the neutral hydrogen and impurity particle behavior, respectively, in the edge plasma. The codes are coupled in a feedback mode.
