Research activities:
The Laboratory for Plasma Physics (LPP) of ERM/KMS is part of the Association between Euratom and the Belgian State for research in thermonuclear fusion.
Since 1981, the experimental work of LPP-ERM/KMS is performed on the TEXTOR tokamak of the ''Forschungszentrum'' Jülich (Germany) in the frame of a bilateral co-operation contract. An ion-cyclotron heating system for TEXTOR is operating since 1983 as part of the activity of the LPP-ERM/KMS group, which also encompasses neutral beam heating physics, confinement studies, edge physics studies and reactivity measurements. The TEXTOR tokamak and the heating system was upgraded in 1994 for long pulse operation (10s). In 1996, a novel structure for international co-operation within the European Fusion Programme has been founded by a clustering of LPP-ERM/KMS with the ''Institut für Plasmaphysik, Association Euratom-KFA'', ''Forschungszentrum'' Jülich (Germany) and the ''FOM-Laboratorium voor Plasmafysica Rijnhuizen'' (The Netherlands). These laboratories join and combine their efforts and resources around the central facility TEXTOR-94 and its supporting devices.
Since 2000, LPP-ERM/KMS also contributes strongly to the scientific operation of the JET facilities at Culham.
The contribution to the thermonuclear research of LPP-ERM/KMS is presently mainly focused on the following domains:
- Confinement studies:
- Radiative Improved Mode (RI-M) studies on TEXTOR-94 and JET.
- Continued collaboration on RI-M-related studies with DIII-D.
- EREF studies: understanding of the effects of radial electric fields on plasma transport, confinement and on the generation of plasma flows in the edge region.
- RF physics and technology:
- Development of ICRH antenna for the enhanced performance phase of JET (JET-EP).
- Optimisation of ICRH systems (effect of second harmonic generation).
- Plasma production by the RF in the presence of a static toroidal magnetic field for wall conditioning.
- ICRF pre-ionisation for low loop voltage start-up.
- Detection of fast particles and study of possible extension to Alpha-particles.
- Theoretical activities:
- Coupled Full-Wave-Fokker-Planck codes.
- Continuation of the development of more sophisticated coupling codes.
- Transport and equilibrium codes.
- Theoretical investigation of unshielded antenna operation including sheath effects.
- Contribution to the theoretical study of the dynamic operation of the new Dynamic Ergodic Divertor in TEXTOR-94, including induced rotation.
- Theory of effects of electric fields and flows.
