Research activities:
Research embraces both magnetic and inertial confinement, and there is much activity in fundamental plasma physics. Both experimental and theoretical work is pursued, including simulation. Experiments on laser-plasma interactions at ultra high intensity and short pulses are done using VULCAN (soon to be upgraded to Petawatt) and the ASTRA lasers at RAL. In house, the group has a terawatt pulsed power generator used to study the dynamics, stability and X-ray emitting properties of multiple wire-array Z-pinches.

The group has access to JET, the Joint European Torus, and is involved with the new tight aspect ratio tokamak, MAST, at Culham Laboratory.

Comprises personnel drawn from various departments of Imperial College.
