Research activities:
Since the beginning of 2000 the JET programme has been managed under the auspices of EFDA (European Fusion Development Agreement) via the JET Implementing Agreement, and carried out by visiting teams of scientists from all over Europe. The UK Atomic Energy Authority maintains and operates the machine under a contract from the European Commission (the JET Operation Contract) via the Euratom-UKAEA Fusion Association at Culham. The overall objective of the programme is the demonstration of the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion power production.
JET's size enables it to act as a model for the next-step machine ITER, enabling plasma studies in near-reactor conditions. Operation of the JET Facilities is contributing to the understanding of several Next Step physics and technology issues, in particular defining the operating conditions of a range of plasma scenarios, developing the tritium plant, remote handling, waste disposal etc... Investigating suitable plasma facing materials and components and testing advances in remote handling, tritium removal technology in its specialist facilities and plan the next D-T campaign.
