Introduction

The Country Nuclear Power Profiles (CNPP) compiles background information on the status and development of nuclear power programmes in Member States. The CNPP's main objectives are to consolidate information about the nuclear power infrastructures in participating countries, and to present factors related to the effective planning, decision making and implementation of nuclear power programmes that together lead to safe and economical operations of nuclear power plants.

The CNPP summarizes organizational and industrial aspects of nuclear power programmes and provides information about the relevant legislative, regulatory and international framework in each country. Its descriptive and statistical overview of the overall energy and electricity situation in each country and its nuclear power framework are intended to serve as an integrated source of key background information about nuclear power programmes in the world. Topics such as reactor safety, nuclear fuel cycle, radioactive waste management and research programmes are for the most part not discussed in detail. Statistical data about nuclear plant operations, energy and electricity use are drawn from national contributions and the IAEA's Power Reactor Information System (PRIS), IAEA's Energy Economic Data Base (EEDB) and World Development Indicators (WDI) of the World Bank.

The CNPP publication is updated annually based on information voluntarily provided by participating IAEA Member States and issued on CD-ROM and as online web pages. The 2017 edition contains country information for 50 countries, including 30 countries currently operating nuclear power plants, and 20 countries with past or planned nuclear power programmes. Each of the 50 profiles in this publication is self-standing and contains information officially provided by the respective national authorities.

The CNPP structure is also currently under review to enhance the profiles’ focus on nuclear power. Along those lines, the reports were adapted by removing select backgrounder and governance information, and the updated CNPP structure was applied for the 2017 edition.

For the 2017 edition, 25 countries provided updated or new profiles. This includes updates from Argentina, Armenia, Belgium, Belarus, Bulgaria, Chile, Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Lithuania, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Russian Federation, Slovakia, Slovenia, Syrian Arab Republic, Thailand, Turkey and the United States of America.

The IAEA officers responsible for the overall coordination and preparation of this publication were M. N. Fisher and T. Yasar of the Division of Nuclear Power.
