Research activities:
Fusion energy research at Los Alamos involves support for the established concepts such as the tokamak and inertial fusion as well as a growing emphasis on innovative and qualitatively different directions such as Magnetized Target Fusion and Penning Trap Fusion. Magnetized Target Fusion has emerged in recent years as an interesting new pathway to fusion with potential for low-cost development in comparison with conventional fusion approaches. Los Alamos fusion funding of $8 million is about equally divided between plasma science and fusion technology. Fusion technology at LANL includes tritium processing systems for MFE and IFE, vacuum pumping systems, ICF and IFE target fabrication and filling, tritiated materials characterization, and materials neutron irradiation and characterization.
