Research activities:
Construction of the medium sized Flexible Heliac stellarator TJ-II was finished at the end of 1996 when the first experiment on magnetic surface mapping was performed. Since Fall 1997, plasma experiments are being conducted using a 1 MW ECRH system, and will be followed by the installation of a 2 MW NBI system.

The programme aims of TJ-II are to explore equilibrium windows between major resonances, to study the influence of low and high order resonances, EC-wave induced electron kinetic effects and transport processes. After installation of stronger additional heating investigations will become possible to study finite ß-effects, bootstrap current effects and to extend the studies on dependence of instabilities on the strength of the magnetic well.

The major current research topics of the Association Euratom-Ciemat are plasma turbulence (influence of radiative instabilities on turbulence, the role of neutrals on turbulence and confinement, non-linear coupling mechanisms, study of the interdependence between impurity ion spectral line widths and electromagnetic fluctuations), confinement (fast particle stabilization, feedback techniques to control plasma instabilities, electric fields and plasma rotation, isotope effect and its relation with turbulence and edge physics, runaway transport studies), comparative studies tokamak-stellarators (critical test of theoretical models) and performance of low-Z coating for first wall conditioning.

Diagnostics developments are undertaken in reflectometry, heavy ion beam probe, plasma radiation detectors, active He/Li atomic beam diagnostics. Separate topics are the investigation of radiation induced damage to diagnostic elements and ceramics.

A small but significant technology programme concerned with the influence of radiation on materials and remote handling is underway in which both ''Next Step'' and longer term issues are being addressed.
