Research activities:
Theoretical studies in the field of plasma physics and controlled fusion research are carried out by the plasma theory group headed by Prof. E. Infeld. The main theme of research is nonlinear phenomena in two-component plasmas. The investigations concern general problems of nonlinear plasma theory, dynamics of nucleation of coherent structures, solutions to a generalized Klein-Gordon equation, a new soliton equation for dipole chains, spontaneous transition from flat to spherical solitons, soliton decay, and the formation of surface plasma solitons. Other theoretical problems explored are e.g. optical guiding of ultrashort laser pulses in a plasma.
