Research activities:
The Association Euratom-CEA operates the super-conducting tokamak Tore Supra (R=2.4m, a=0.8m, Ip=2.0MA, B=4.5T) and studies long pulse, high performance steady state discharges. Tore Supra started operation in 1988 and since then, the super-conducting magnet was operated. Many experiments could be carried out (more than 30,000 were performed) and a record discharge duration of two minutes was achieved in 1996 with 280MJ removed by the actively cooled, high heat flux, limiter and first wall components.

Current drive and heating of the plasma is provided by Lower Hybrid (6MW) and Ion Cyclotron (11MW) waves (LH and IC). This non inductive current drive capability allows to produce internal confinement barriers associated to a variety of current profile configurations, corresponding to several physics scenarios: high bootstrap current, high confinement with IC waves or LH-induced reversed shear modes.

An ergodic divertor configuration has been implemented and studied up to 1999, producing highly radiating edge layers together with impurity screening. The features of steady state particle control with pump limiters have been studied and the effect of wall retention or desorption highlighted. 3MW of electron cyclotron waves power is under development; one gyrotron was already used in 1999. High speed pellets (3-4 km/s) and repetitive pellet injection (600 m/s) experiments have been made.

The project of improving the reliability and performance of plasma facing components of Tore Supra is under completion (CIEL). It should provide a large increase of the heat exhaust (in the range of 20MW of radiated and convected power) and allow for higher plasma performance over very long time scale (1000s). Another project (CIMES) aims at upgrading of the RF systems so as to reach such long time discharges. The first part of the project already got approval, aiming at the realisation of a LHCD system (8MW, 1000s).

The Association Euratom-CEA, in collaboration with other research groups or industry, is active in plasma engineering like plasma facing components developments and qualification, powerful high frequency technology, cryo-pumping ... An active participation to technological activities in view of ITER is also underway: super-conducting magnets, plasma facing components, blankets, safety, RF heating and current drive, negative ion based neutral beam injection, plasma scenarios.

The Association takes part in all aspects of the operation, coordination and scientific/technological activities of JET in the new framework of the EFDA organisation which started in 2000. Many scientific results have been obtained in the experimental campaigns with particular focus on internal transport barriers associated with current profile control. In the framework of JET Enhanced Performance (JET EP) Project, the Association is committed in a new high performance divertor design.

The site of Cadarache is currently being studied by a European group as a possible European site for ITER (Projects EISS and CLES). Safety and seismic aspects, transportation of heavy loads, electricity and cooling supply are particularly looked at, as well as socio-economic aspects of the project.
