Research activities:
Plasma engineering studies on both magnetic and inertial confinement fusion systems are active in a number of areas. These include the engineering considerations for a dense-plasma focus (DPF) fusion plasma thruster, fast alpha-particle transport in field-reversed configuration (FRC) compact tori, energy confinement for the Spheromak reactor-plasma configurations, and the inertial confinement ion beam and target instabilities.

In the thermal-hydraulics blanket engineering work, emphasis has been given to the study of two-phase flows both in the absence and presence of a magnetic field. A comprehensive investigation of nucleate boiling of mercury in the presence of a horizontal magnetic field is a related effort. An extensive experimental program has examined mercury-nitrogen systems utilizing hot film anemometry.
