Research activities:
The Institute for Fusion Studies originated in 1980, in response to a Department of Energy call for a center of excellence in controlled fusion theory. Supported by the Department of Energy and by matching funds from the State of Texas, it is mandated to study the theoretical physics of fusion and plasma (the state of matter characterizing stars as well as most fusion experiments), with emphasis on fundamental and long-range issues. As the largest university-based fusion theory group in the US, it has a special role in training students and postdoctoral researchers. It also bears certain fusion-program responsibilities, being in particular the principal US site for the US-Japan Joint Institute for Fusion Theory. The research being pursued at the Institute is diverse, strongly coupled to other research programs in the University, and interdisciplinary. It sponsors a vigorous visitor program, as well as a very large number of research collaborations with laboratories and universities throughout the world.
