Research activities:
The research programme of IPP is aimed at developing and investigating the basic plasma physics required for a nuclear fusion power plant. For this purpose IPP designs, constructs, and conducts fusion experiments of the tokamak (ASDEX Upgrade) and stellarator (WENDELSTEIN 7-AS, WENDELSTEIN 7-X) types.

The objectives of ASDEX Upgrade are to investigate a divertor configuration suitable for a fusion reactor, to study the interaction between plasma and vessel wall under reactor-relevant plasma edge conditions and to investigate advanced tokamak scenarios for steady-state operation with internal transport barriers. Thus, the results of ASDEX Upgrade are an important input for the design of ITER. In addition, IPP participates in the scientific exploration of the JET tokamak.

The WENDELSTEIN 7-AS advanced stellarator, the first experiment with a modular coil system for magnetic field generation, has achieved clearly improved plasma parameters and confinement properties as compared with its predecessor, WENDELSTEIN 7-A. These results, together with detailed theoretical calculations formed the basis for the WENDELSTEIN 7-X stellarator, which is to demonstrate under reactor-relevant plasma parameters and with an optimized magnetic field the physical qualification of a fusion power plant based on the stellarator concept. The device is now being built at the Greifswald Branch Institute of IPP.

Other investigations in IPP are concerned with theory, plasma-wall interaction, materials research and surface physics.
