Research activities:
The Fusion Program of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a major part of the national fusion energy sciences program, encompasses nearly all areas of magnetic fusion research. The program is directed toward the development of fusion as an economical and environmentally attractive energy source for the future. The program involves staff from ORNL, private industry, the academic community and other fusion laboratories, in the United States and abroad. The areas addressed by the Fusion Program include the following:

• theoretical and experimental studies aimed at understanding the science of fusion plasmas,
• investigation of improvements to the tokamak, stellarator and spherical torus confinement schemes,
• enabling technology development for existing and future experiments,
• engineering design support,
• the development of radiation-resistant and low-activation materials,
• assembly and distribution to the fusion community of databases on atomic physics and radiation effects, and
• exploration of opportunities to apply the unique skills, technology, and techniques developed in the course of this work to other areas.
