Research activities:
We study the relativistic dynamics of fusion-produced MeV ions in magnetized plasma. This includes the excitation of ion cyclotron waves by the MeV ions due to relativistic effects, the resultant anomalous thermalization and/or selective gyrobroadening of their energy spectrum, the comparison with the experimental measurements at Joint European Tokamak and at Princeton's Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor, and the relativistic ion cyclotron instabilities in non-uniform magnetic fields (e.g., the special localized cyclotron eigenmodes). While exploring the important fundamental physics related to collective thermodynamics, we hope to study further on the nonlinear dynamics of the fast ions and to make contributions to world-wide efforts questing for controlled fusion energy.
In addition to fusion, we also study the physics of space plasmas, coherent radiation from electron beams, and the dynamics of laser-ablated plasmas for film deposition.
