The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) is part of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Paris (France) and of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Vienna (Austria). It is an institute of research and high level training.

The ICTP has the following objectives:

a)

to help in fostering the growth of advanced studies and research in physical and mathematical sciences, especially in developing countries;

b)

to provide an international forum for scientific contacts between scientists from all countries;

c)

to provide its visitors and associates, principally from developing countries, facilities for conducting original research.

The range of activities of the ICTP includes:

• Condensed matter physics
• Physics of high and intermediate energies
• Mathematics
• Physics and energy
• Physics of the environment
• Physics of the living state
• Applied physics

The ICTP organizes an extended course in plasma physics every odd year, as well as a topical meeting every even year.
