Research activities relevant to IFE

1. Experimental
   X-ray spectroscopy of solid-state density plasmas, isochorically heated to a few hundred eV by using high-contrast ultrashort laser pulses; generation and characterization of MeV electron jets suited for fast ignition; propagation of these fast electrons through underdense and overdense plasmas; generation and characterization of MeV proton jets for fast ignition emitted from the rear side of thin foils irradiated on their front side with high-intensity pulses; generation of intense 10-fs pulses by superradiant amplification.
2. Theoretical
   Fast ignition related work: Theoretical investigations as well as development and application of 3D-PIC codes as to the interaction of ultrashort laser pulses with underdense/overdense plasmas at relativistic intensities and fast-electron propagation through underdense/overdense plasmas; design and implosion physics of IFE targets driven by lasers and heavy ion beams.
