Research activities:
Some components of the future fusion reactor ITER will be cooled by liquid water. Radiolytic decomposition of water with the formation of a potentially explosive mixture (H2 + O2) is expected, due to the intense radiation fields (neutrons and gamma rays). Irradiation experiments are performed in reactors at CEA/Saclay to simulate the ITER conditions. The effect of dissolved hydrogen in water and suppression of radiolytic products is studied in different conditions (temperature, impurity content, radiation types ...).
