OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the Technical Meeting (TM) are to:
• Provide a forum to participants from Member States to discuss with experts from Joint Convention (JC) Contracting Parties implementation measures for the establishment of national organizations for the management of radioactive waste in the framework of national policies and strategies
• Discuss the mission and responsibilities of such national organizations
• Exchange information on the challenges faced by new organizations for the management of radioactive waste
• Exchange information on experience with the relationship between the Government, Regulatory Authorities and organizations for the management of radioactive waste
• Exchange views and strategies on informing the public
• Discuss initiatives in international and multinational cooperation
• Visit to a radioactive waste disposal site in France.
AUDIENCE
The TM aims to bring together policy makers, operators and regulators from Member States and JC Contracting Parties to exchange information, experiences and views on the topics mentioned.
PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
The opening session will include welcoming addresses by the JC President, representatives of the IAEA and of the host government.
A series of topical sessions will cover issues relating to national programmes in radioactive waste management; the status, responsibilities and missions of national organizations for the management of radioactive waste; challenges faced by new organizations; the relationship between the Government, Regulatory Authorities and organizations for the management of radioactive waste; views and strategies on informing the public and initiatives for international and multinational cooperation. The programme includes a technical visit to a radioactive waste disposal site in France on the last day of the meeting.
The chairpersons will summarize the sessions and will prepare recommendations for the concluding session. The President of the meeting will present the findings of the TM, which should lead to the formulation of findings and recommendations for stakeholders in the area of national organizations for waste management.

The main part of the TM will be devoted to the following issues, which have been identified as topics for discussion:
• National policies and strategies for the management of radioactive waste
• Implementation measures for the establishment of national organizations for the management of radioactive waste
• Responsibilities and missions of national organizations for the management of radioactive waste
• Challenges posed by new organizations
• Relations between the Government, Regulatory Authorities and organizations for the management of radioactive waste
• Strategies and experience with information directed at the public
• Initiatives in international and multinational cooperation
• Issues for newcomer States
• Future strategies
• Technical discussions on the disposal of radioactive waste during the visit to the disposal site.
