Abstract.  It is shown that high $ \beta$ ($ \beta$ is the ratio of plasma pressure to the magnetic field pressure) may deteriorate the confinement of trapped energetic ions in spherical tokamaks (ST) during MHD events, such as sawtooth oscillations and internal reconnection events (IRE). This result indicates that moderate rather than very high $ \beta$ may be preferable in STs.
