Abstract:

DSTO has conducted research into multiple explosive detection systems (some in stand-off mode):

  1. Technical testing of
    1. THZ for suicide, mines
    2. Liquid explosives detector
    3. FIDO and various IMS for trace detection
    4. Metal detection arrays (Chubby and STMRS)
    5. GPR
    6. IR imagery
    7. NLJD
  2. Operational testing of
    1. THZ in airport and field
    2. Liquid
    3. Trace in airport
    4. Metal detector arrays
  3. Methodology
    1. GC/MS for identification in trace testing
    2. Standardised Test protocols – currently have one for IMS testing
    3. Methodology for testing human/system interactions in an operational environment – used for THZ and soon for liquid and other testing
  4. Integration
    1. Robotics studies
    2. THZ and IR results for buried and hidden objects
