Technical Remarks from the Producers

This is the second time that the proceedings of the IAEA Fusion Energy Conference are being published as an IAEA CD-ROM (to be distributed cost-free to all participants, interested persons, institutions and libraries) and on the Internet. PDF (Portable Document Format) was chosen again as document format for the papers due to the availability of a number of free PDF viewers.

Out of the 401 expected papers, including the post-deadline papers and summaries, 380 were submitted successfully to the IAEA via our newly developed, web browser based, password protected file submission system LISA (Lightweight Interactive Storage Application for the Collection of Conference Proceedings online, more information below). Three papers have been withdrawn in advance, 7 presenters never contacted LISA, 4 presenters gave notice that they did not intend to publish their contributions on this CD-ROM, and 7 nominated authors of accepted papers were not present at the conference. Additionally, 2 papers successfully submitted had to be refused for publication because the authors were not present at the conference. Thus 378 papers are published on this CD-ROM.

LISA, our web browser based file transmission system, worked reliably over several months before it was switched off end of March 2001. As reported by many authors of submitted papers, the tour through LISA was easy to understand and the system easy to use. The feedback information provided by LISA after file submission helped authors to create correct files in cases where the first file transfer attempt had been unsuccessful, owing, for example, to the use of fonts which are not supported by all versions of Acrobat Reader, incorrect file formats, etc. (PDF and PostScript were the required formats; correct PostScript files were converted by LISA automatically to PDF using Acrobat Distiller). Some authors went through a lengthy learning process and contacted IAEA staff on this subject by e-mail before being able to produce the files in the correct format; only three persons needed strong additional support by e-mail though.

Unfortunately, LISA was interrupted for about two days (30 September 2000, late evening, until 2 October 2000, afternoon) because of an unexpected disk space error which occurred at the IAEA server. For this reason and to allow some authors to resubmit their papers in edited format, the deadline for paper submission was extended from 30 September 2000 to 31 October 2000. The deadline for the submission of the summary papers was set to a later date.

LISA will be further improved for file submission and production of the FEC2002 proceedings and will be upgraded with respect to file recognition, testing and conversion according to software developments in this field. The system will be also modified in a way to allow authors to submit their short abstracts and 2-page synopses electronically to the IAEA server for consideration by the Programme Committee 2002. Information on this service will be put on the IAEA web page in early 2002.

The contributions were not refereed; they are being issued as provided by the authors, with the exception of some layout changes. Text and figures of the papers may appear on the screen slightly fuzzy but they do print correctly (please note that papers were designed for A4 paper format; use Acrobat Reader's ``Fit to Page'' option - if available - when printing to other paper formats). A few papers may print rather slowly, and very few papers create Acrobat Reader error messages but display and print almost perfectly.

Concerning the production of the Question and Answer files (Q&A's) included on this CD-ROM, volunteers from several institutes around the world undertook the task of typing the Q&A's. The handwritten form sheets were sent to the volunteers by air mail immediately after the conference. Unfortunately, two letters containing the Q&A forms were lost on their way to the volunteers. Therefore two sessions do not contain Q&A's. We regret this circumstance.

We would like to thank all the authors who submitted papers, as well as the volunteers who typed the Q&A's, for their patience and collaboration.
