Abstract. Two types of compact stellarators are examined as reactors: two- and three-field-period (M = 2 and 3) quasi-axisymmetric devices with volume-average = 4 - 5% and M = 2 and 3 quasi-poloidal devices with = 10 - 15%. These low-aspect-ratio stellarator-tokamak hybrids differ from conventional stellarators in their use of the plasma-generated bootstrap current to supplement the poloidal field from external coils. Using the ARIES-AT model with Bmax = 12T on the coils gives Compact Stellarator reactors with R = 7.3 - 8.2m, a factor of 2-3 smaller R than other stellarator reactors for the same assumptions, and neutron wall loadings up to 3.7MWm- 2.
