This was the first time that the proceedings of an IAEA Fusion Energy Conference (FEC) were published as an IAEA CD-ROM in addition to a limited number of paper copies of the proceedings. PDF (Portable Document Format) was chosen as document format due to the availability of a number of free PDF viewers.
Difficulties associated with electronic file transmission from authors to the IAEA caused a delay in this publication. In total 351 manuscripts have been expected (342 regular, 5 summary and 4 post deadline papers). Till December 1999, 283 papers have been received in electronic form as correct PDF files (or could be repaired) or as PostScript files that could be converted to PDF. In the course of the year 2000, 38 additional papers have been received partly requiring extensive help from IAEA staff to get them into correct PDF. These additional papers are now included in the 2001 Edition of the FEC98 CD-ROM proceedings. 30 papers have not been received so far, their titles and authors do not appear in the sessions nor in the index lists of the FEC98 CD-ROM proceedings.
The contributions are not refereed, they were used as provided by the authors with the exception of some layout changes. Text and figures of the papers may appear on the screen a bit fuzzy but they do print correctly (please set your printer to A4 format). Some few papers may print rather slow.
