The International Conference « Modern Radiotherapy : Advances and Challenges in Radiation Protection of Patients » is organized by ASN, the French Nuclear Safety Authority, in cooperation with International Atomic Energy Agency, the European Commission and World Health Organization.

Background

The use of ionizing radiation in medicine has led to major improvements in the diagnosic and treatment of human diseases. While bringing new benefits for cancer treatment, modern radiotherapy also presents new challenges in the field of radiation protection of patients.

After severe accidents occurred recently in France, the French Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) has taken several initiatives in strengthening the control of radiotherapy centers (inspection) and the regulation (quality assurance). At international level, several initiatives on the topic of radiation safety in medical practices have already been taken or are in preparation.

Objectives

The major objective of the conference is to provide a forum for participants to exchange experience, and to review the actions implemented to improve the radiation safety in radiotherapy at both national and international level.
