Since 1 January 2000, the Euratom-UKAEA Fusion Association has been responsible for the safety, maintenance and operation of the JET facilities through the JET Operation Contract under the European Fusion Development Agreement. Several other EURATOM fusion Associations second staff to UKAEA to assist with JET operations. The Euratom-UKAEA Fusion Association also provides host support to the EFDA Close Support Unit (CSU)^* at Culham.

Research activities:
The UKAEA Association's programme is focussed on the tokamak line of development through experimental studies on:

• MAST (Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak) a medium sized tokamak investigating the viability of the spherical tokamak concept as a potential power plant, as well as adding to the basic understanding of tokamak behaviour, through expanding the tokamak database to more extreme plasma geometry and shapes.
• COMPASS (COMPact ASSembly), a small non-circular tokamak that addresses the key issues for `Next Step' tokamaks. In particular the control of performance limiting instabilities, the impact of error fields, disruption effects such as halo current generation and the characteristics of high confinement (`H-mode') plasmas including edge localised modes (ELMs) with strong electron heating.

The experimental programme is supported by a strong theory and modelling group and a fusion power system studies group, looking at the safety, environmental and socio-economic aspects of fusion power production as well as material properties and waste issues. There is also an initiative to help industry benefit from fusion research, identifying spin-offs into other markets and links to related areas of basic science. Public understanding is also given a high priority in the organisation with outreach initiatives and active visitors programme.
