Experimental studies of plasma-wall interaction using carbonization, boronization or lithium coating of the first wall material of a tokamak device. Plasma diagnostics using emission and laser spectroscopy are developed for understanding physics and chemistry of divertor plasmas and negative ion source plasmas (Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics).
Plasma physics studies with associated edge plasma physics and reactor/component engineering programs are in progress in the Department of Energy Engineering and Science. The subjects include high heat fluxes onto the divertor, tokamak edge control, reactor and component thermal hydraulics, applied nuclear physics and superconductor engineering.
The properties of wall materials in a fusion reactor are investigated in the Department of Crystalline Material Science.
Neutron system, high temperature solid state chemistry, radiation detector engineering (including fusion neutron diagnostics), nuclear chemical engineering, applied nuclear physics and tritium handling associated with fusion reactor problems are developed in the Department of Nuclear Engineering.
