Lithuania’s national Radioactive Waste Management Agency (RATA) requested the IAEA to conduct a peer review of the safety of the proposed disposal solution for radioactive waste arising mainly from the operation and decommissioning of the Ignalina nuclear power plant. The objective of the peer review, carried out in December 2005, was to provide an independent assessment of the safety related aspects of the sites under consideration on the basis of international safety standards and applicable national standards. This report presents the consensus view of the international group of experts convened by the IAEA to carry out the review.
