Description

Solid and liquid organic radioactive wastes are generated from nuclear fuel cycle facilities and nuclear research centres, from certain uses of radioisotopes in medicine, and from research and development in other fields. Compared to other radioactive wastes, the volume of organic wastes generated is small; nevertheless they require a waste management strategy for safe handling, processing and final disposal. This report presents a review of the latest technical information available on options for the treatment and conditioning of organic radioactive wastes.
Contents: 1. Introduction; 2. Waste characterization; 3. Waste management strategies; 4. Treatment and immobilization options; 5. Characterization of conditioned organic wastes; 6. Conclusions.
