The IAEA Safety Standards Series comprises publications of a regulatory nature
covering nuclear safety, radiation protection, radioactive waste management,
the transport of radioactive materials, the safety of nuclear fuel cycle
facilities and quality assurance. These publications are issued under the
terms of Article III of the Agency's Statute, which authorizes the Agency to
establish standards of safety for protection against ionizing radiation. The
Safety Standards Series supersedes the Safety Series, in which over
200 publications were issued. Safety Standards Series publications are
categorized into:
|
Safety Fundamentals (F; blue lettering), stating basic objectives, concepts and principles of safety and protection;
|
|
Safety Requirements (R; red lettering), establishing the requirements that must be fulfilled to ensure safety for particular activities or applications; and
|
|
Safety Guides (G; green lettering), recommending actions, conditions or procedures for complying with these safety requirements.
|
For numbering purposes, the Safety
Standards Series is subdivided into the areas of nuclear safety (NS), radiation
safety (RS), transport safety (TS) and waste safety (WS), and also general
safety (GS; that is, of relevance in two or more of the four
areas).
