Research activities:
Research programs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison contribute to many areas of plasma physics and fusion. There are major experimental programs in three main types of magnetic confinement devices: spherical tokamak [Pegasus experiment; extemely low aspect ratio and RF emphasis; EP Dept.], reversed field pinch [Madison Symmetric Torus (MST) experiment; turbulence and current profile control emphasis; Physics Dept.] and stellarator/torsatron [Helically Symmetric eXperiment (HSX); ECH-heated stellarator with quasi-helical symmetry emphasizing effects of symmetry breaking; ECE Dept.].

Other experimental activities include: Plasma diagnostics development (EP and Physics), collaborations with major tokamak programs (mainly DIII-D), an Inertial Electrostatic Confinement (IEC) device (EP), basic plasma physics studies and plasma-aided manufacturing (ECE and EP).

The Center for Plasma Theory and Computation is an interdepartmental (EP, ECE and Physics) entity that fosters studies in a number of theoretical and computational areas (plasma waves, structures, ideal and nonideal MHD stability, turbulence, transport, heating, current drive, etc.).

The Fusion Technology Institute performs fusion reactor design studies (e.g., for D-T and D-He³ reactors, for inertial fusion), and neutronics and blanket studies. There is also some fusion technology development work for superconducting magnets, materials, gyrotrons, and free electron lasers. On average, about 25 faculty, 40 professional staff and 60 graduate students are engaged in plasma and fusion research at UW-Madison.
