Research activities:
The magnetic fusion program at General Atomics is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy at approximately $45M per year. The ICF and IFE activities are also funded by the U.S. DOE at approximately $15M per year. The GA Fusion Group employs a total of 300 scientists and support personnel, which includes 65 collaborating scientists from other U.S. and international fusion organizations.

General Atomics has active roles in both the magnetic and inertial fusion programs. The focus of the magnetic fusion program is research on the DIII-D tokamak by GA staff, national collaborators, and international collaborators. The inertial fusion program focuses on target fabrication and handling systems for other laboratories, and develops lasers and optical components for fusion and other applications. A strong theory and computational science program supports these efforts, and jointly develops the scientific basis for designing future experiments.

The DIII-D National Fusion Program focuses on understanding the science of fusion energy with the intent of developing fusion into a viable energy source. The DIII-D tokamak is an extremely flexible device capable of producing highly non-circular (kappa up to 2) reactor-relevant discharges. The device is capable of diverted and non-diverted configurations. Substantial neutral beam, ECRF, and ICRF heating are used to heat the plasma. A comprehensive diagnostics set provides definitive data for analysis and comparison to theory. The research program focuses on stability, confinement, boundary and particle physics, and heating and current drive.

Recent emphasis of the research program includes; a) the use of the divertor to provide power and particle control at the plasma edge, b) active stabilization of the resistive wall modes to increase the plasma energy (beta limit), c) understanding of internal plasma transport barriers and their use to improve plasma confinement, and d) the use of ECRH to provide localized heating and current drive to shape the plasma profiles and control plasma instabilities. General Atomics is also capable of providing support and hardware in key areas of magnetic fusion technology, including: high power microwave systems, advanced plasma control systems, high heat flux systems, neutron shields and blankets, and low activation materials.

GA is the Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) target support contractor, providing research, development, fabrication, and characterization of targets for the U.S. DOE ICF program. It also provides cryogenic engineering design, development and fabrication of cryogenic target handling systems for ICF experiments such as Omega at the University of Rochester, and the National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

GA's activities in Inertial Fusion Energy (IFE) include development of IFE target fabrication and injection technologies, and both experimental and theoretical research into the ``fast ignition'' fusion phenomenon.

GA's Photonics division is developing lasers and laser components such as fast pulsed head-ends, optical gratings, and beam optics for fast pulsed ``Petawatt'' laser systems for fusion and science research.
