Research activities:
The U.S. Fusion Energy Sciences Program has been restructured from an energy technology development program to a fusion energy sciences program. The mission of the Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) program, a multi-purpose, scientific research effort, is to advance plasma science, fusion science, and fusion technology--the knowledge base needed for an economically and environmentally attractive fusion energy source. By providing support for the FES program, DOE serves a unique role as the only source of funding for fusion science and high temperature plasma physics in the United States, and as a major source of funds for general plasma science research.

The Policy Goals associated with this mission are:

This mission statement and its associated Policy Goals have been developed with extensive stakeholder input, and they have been endorsed by the Fusion Energy Sciences Advisory Committee (FESAC) and the Secretary of Energy Advisory Board (SEAB).
