Research activities:
The Laboratory of Plasma Studies carries out a wide range of fundamental and applied research in plasma physics including, in addition to fusion research, ionospheric, magnetospheric and solar investigations, and plasma lighting. Our fusion research consists of two projects, one in magnetic confinement fusion and the other in inertial confinement fusion. The magnetic fusion project has as its goal generating a field-reversing ion ring using intense pulsed ion beams, and studying the stability and plasma confinement properties of the resulting field-reversed configuration. The necessary experimental facility, known as FIREX, is in operation. Supporting analytic and computer simulation studies are an integral part of the project. Our inertial fusion project work is done in support of wire array implosion studies being carried out at Sandia National Laboratories and concentrates on wire vaporization, expansion and implosion experiments.
