Research activities:
Auburn University has a diverse research program in plasma physics that includes fusion research, space plasma research, basic plasma physics (including dusty plasmas), and atomic physics for fusion plasmas. The main focus of fusion plasma research at Auburn is the experimental study MHD instabilities in current-driven stellarator plasmas. These investigations will be carried out in a new device, the Compact Toroidal Hybrid (CTH), now under construction with completion expected in 2003. Theoretical studies of ion cyclotron wave mode conversion and magnetic error fields in toroidal plasmas are conducted as well. Theoretical atomic collision and radiative physics efforts focus on the development of new computational methods and new diagnostic techniques, collaboration with experimental accelerator groups, and the generation of atomic data for astrophysical and laboratory plasma scientists.
