Research activities:
Research in controlled fusion at the Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics focuses on the concept of inertial confinement fusion with heavy ion beams as drivers. Theoretical studies are conducted mainly with the aim to develop basic concepts for driver and target designs that would fit in a self-consistent project. Experiments are carried out to elucidate specific aspects of ion beam generation, final focusing and interaction with plasma targets.

Experimental activity concentrates now on the modernization of the ITEP accelerator complex (proton synchrotron and storage ring) for the heavy-ion fusion investigations (TWAC-facility).
