Research activities:
Studies of properties and confinement improvement of a Field Reversed Configuration (FRC) plasma are carried out on the FRC Injection Experiment (FIX). The theta pinch-produced FRC plasma is translated into a 3 m long, 0.8 m diameter metal chamber to attain a configuration life time of 0.5 ms with Te + Ti ≈ 200 eV and n ≈ 5 x 1019m-3, into which neutral beam is injected.

Laser Engineering

Research activities:
Using ultra-intense laser systems with laser intensities exceeding 1020 W/cm2, a new concept for inertial fusion energy ``fast ignition'' is intensively studied. Using large laser facilities, matter state under extreme pressure up to 100 Mbar is studied with use of strong laser induced shock waves. Next generation of highly efficient laser systems is developed.

Supra-high Temperature Engineering

Research activities:
Plasma/particle-wall/surface interaction studies are carried out with the High Flux Irradiation Test device (HiFIT), which is an ECR plasma based ion source with the irradiation flux up to 3.5 x 1021 H/m2s (3 keV H3+). Studies of new first wall concepts such as a pebble drop divertor system are also carried out.

Electro-magnetic Fluids Engineering

Research activities:
Magnetohydrodynamics of plasmas and liquid metals are studied. Numerical analysis of high temperature tokamak plasma, experiments on the behaviour of low temperature plasma in magnetic multipole configuration and of liquid metal flow under magnetic field are their current topics.

Fusion Engineering

Research activities:
Fourteen MeV neutron effects on various materials and components are studied for development of a fusion reactor. Also new applications of submicro ion and atom cluster beams and ultra-intense femtosecond laser are under investigation.
