Research activities:
At present we are carrying out a program in both fusion plasma physics (plasma simulation, theoretical plasma physics), and fusion engineering and technology (magnets, neutron activation, safety assessment), with application to both present-day experiments and future machines (e.g., ITER, Ignitor). The following major undertakings can be identified:

  1. Edge plasma modelling and plasma-wall interactions (e.g., finite elements and adaptive numerical methods, analysis of limiter plasmas)
  2. Control of impurities in tokamaks (e.g., self-consistent edge-core modeling)
  3. Kinetic plasma simulation
  4. Magnetic reconnection
  5. Interaction of alpha particles with MHD modes
  6. Technology of superconducting magnets for fusion (e.g., development and validation of thermal-hydraulic codes Mithrandir and M&M, and of coupled electro-magnetic and thermal-hydraulic models of CICC)
  7. Low activation materials and waste management
  8. Risk and safety assessment of fusion reactors
Funding sources and level: Major funding sources over the past 4-5 years have been ENEA/EURATOM (EFDA) for ca. 150 kEuro/year, MURST for ca. 25 kEuro/year
