Research activities:
The institute is involved in the development of high speed pellet injectors, using the light gas gun technique. The injectors tested include two-stage and three-stage light gas guns. With the two-stage setup, velocities up to 6000 m/s with 4 mm diameter plastic pellets and over 3000 m/s with solid deuterium pellets (injectors coupled with cryogenic plants installed at ENEA laboratories in Frascati) have been achieved. The three-stage setup was developed for accelerating plastic pellets of 2 mm diameter. Up to now, the maximum velocity achieved is about 9000 m/s. The current activity is mainly related to the problem of enhancing both reliability and performance of the three-stage gun. A computer code based on the method of characteristics has been developed for predicting the injector performances.
