Research activities:
FZK is associated to the European Fusion Programme. Contributions are made to Next Step/ITER Technology and to the Long Term (reactor oriented) Technology Programme. Relevant work fields are superconducting magnets, gyrotrons, cryogenic pumping, clean-up of plasma exhaust, load conditions and lifetime of high heat load components, design and r+d on breeding blankets, and qualification of reduced activation structural materials.

Furthermore, FZK is project leader of the European part of the IFMIF project.

Major test facilities are available to test materials and components. The large coil test facility TOSKA is prepared to test the ITER Toroidal Field Model Coil.

A central tritium laboratory serves for testing fuel cycle components and systems for ITER on a technical scale.

FZK develops gyrotrons in cooperation with industry for the stellarator project Wendelstein 7X.
