Research activities:
Research activities on plasma-fusion and space science at the institute are being carried out in three ways: theoretically, computationally and experimentally. High temperature relativistic plasma is the topic of theoretical research which has wider applications in laser-fusion, plasma accelerators, plasma heating, pulsar radiation and other stellar phenomena. Nonlinear plasma-wave interaction in an ultra-relativistically hot rotating plasma under strong gravity related with pulsars and with the early universe is the topic of current interest. Investigation on nonlinear waves in rotating pulsars under strong gravity is in progress. A small scale mirror machine is being developed as well as Langmuir diagnostics and a plasma spectroscopy system, with the aim to understand the basic properties of plasma as the fourth state of matter, and also in the context of fusion and plasma astrophysics. The main objectives are experiments and developments of diagnostic techniques that are suitable for a small scale research programme. Dusty plasmas, interest for which has recently emerged, and nonlinear Alfvén waves in space plasmas also are to be investigated in the laboratory model.
